FOOTBAG |
Sanctioned by:
The World Footbag Association
under the authority of
The International Footbag Advisory Board
While 1997 will mark the 18th annual World Footbag Championships, it's also the 25th Anniversary of the sport of footbag, which was created in Oregon in 1972 by Mike Marshall and John Stalberger. (For more information on the history of footbag, click here.) This World Championships is a special celebration of this major milestone, since the main event in this sport is "coming home" to Oregon to mark the occasion! Watch this space for any last-minute updates or other information, or check What's New on Footbag WorldWide.
A press release is online, in addition to the information on this site. If you are interested in covering this event, please feel free to contact us via e-mail or telephone. The event coordinator, Kendall KIC, may be reached at worlds@footbag.org and at (503) 236-0939. We will be happy to supply you with more information and press materials. This event is a special celebration of the 25th anniversary of the sport,
which will include the creation and induction of the first members into
the Footbag Hall of Fame. For more
information on this special event, click here.
Net finals will be held in conjunction with The Bite of Portland,
one of Portland's largest civic events. The Bite is represented by all
of Portland's finest restaurants, continuous live music, stage shows,
etc., and proceeds will benefit the Oregon Special Olympics. See
the schedule for more information about
dates and times.
The Freestyle finals will be held at the World Trade Center, across
Front Avenue from The Bite site. It is an open-air, covered area
with beautiful acoustics and atmosphere. See the schedule
for more information about dates and times.
The host hotel is the Silver Cloud Inn, at 2426 NW Vaughn (just a few minutes away from downtown). Rooms with two queen beds, as well as rooms with one king bed, will be available. There are hide-a-bed couches in every room. The flat rate for the event is $75 for two queens and $65 for one king. With the rooms come free continental breakfast, free local phone calls, laundry service, a fridge in every room, a jacuzzi (and there are jacuzzi rooms available), and a conference room for the freestyle jam. Call 800-205-6939 or (503) 242-2400 and mention Sole Purpose to get the Worlds rate. NOTE: the host hotel is current full. If you need an alternative,
see the hotel information on the competitor
information page.
The official travel agency, for the third year in a row, is Oaks Travel. They have consistently helped footbag players get to events as inexpensively as possible, and with an 800 number that works from anywhere in the US or Canada, they are the best choice. (Not to mention, if you book your travel through Oaks Travel and identify yourself as a footbag player, they donate a portion of their commission directly to the World Championships sponsorship fund.)
Oaks Travel Detailed transportation information is available on the competitor information page.
