Well well well, footbag, hmmmmm. One day I got an IM from my old bass teacher and friend James Geraci, who was going to college in a far away land named Texas. James asked me "Hey Alex, do you ever play Hacky Sack in school?" To which I responded "Yea, a little bit". At which point, he proceeded to send me a link to FLIPSIDER.com. I watched a few videos and was AMAZED!! I could not believe these tricks were possible, especially since even the best players in my school were only hitting flying butterflies. Anyway, I got a pair of lavers and a bag off of WFA near the start of 2003 and messed around every now and then. I sometimes was able to make it into the city and play with the worlds greatest club, NYFA! However, it wasn't until after James had returned home from a trip to worlds in Prague that I decided I was gonna really put some effort into this sport. I attended my first tournament which was "kick till your sick", and was introduced to a whole new level of the sport. I competed in intermediate shred 30, and was plopped in last place. At the tournament I became reunited with two shredders who I had met at a somerville shred session, Chris Kovacs and Josh Benham. We got tight like the white on rice! My next tournament was chilly philly, where I made even more friends! woo hoo! David Clavens, Steve Goldberg, and Ales Zelinka being the main ones. After that tournament was when I finally learned how to make progress somewhat, which is by NOT trying tricks you are not ready for every single run. I continue to train and kick with James, Dave, Chris, Josh, and NYFA whenever any of them are around or I can make a trip. Leg ball is fun, so enjoy!
