You should end up with an oval shaped opening. The longer this opening is the more filler material can pass through. I've found that 3/4 of an inch to one inch (2-3cm) works best. You do not want this opening to be the same length as your footbag though, it may not work properly. The straight corners that may come up can be rounded off to keep from poking any holes.
