1997 14th Annual Emerald City Open Footbag Tournament June 7 - 8, 1997 Lid Park, Mercer Island, Washington Summary of Event: With the help of our sponsors and advertising we drew a total of 57 competitors from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Arizona, and a great local crowd of spectators! Friday night, the early crew rolled into Greg Potts' new house for a "shocking" pre-registration party. We got through much of the registration process, broke out the smashing ECO 97 t-shirts (logo compliments of Kelly Hobkirk), and even had time for a little impromptu kick out on the front lawn (as if there wouldn't be). We had a pretty bad weather scare for the two week prior to the event, but besides a little mist during Saturday morning setup, we again had perfect weather the entire weekend! After morning setup and registration Saturday, we cranked up the tunes and got the competition started. Piecora's New York Pizza once again treated us to many of their fine pizza pies both days. We made it through the final matches in the Novice and Advanced categories, and through the semifinals in Mixed Doubles and Women's and Open Singles, saving the three final matches for Sunday afternoon. Simon and Heather really out-did themselves Saturday night. Competitors feasted on grilled northwest salmon, corn-on-the-cob, pasta salad, etc, etc, etc including one of Heather's outrageous deserts, and their hot tub soothed the aches and pains of the day... Sunday was an equally awesome day. We started the morning right with the timed consecutive event, and moved on to doubles footbag net. The final matches started at around 4pm, and there was some great competition, especially the mixed doubles match! We finished the award ceremony and were home before dark, so we really couldn't have asked for much more fun in one short weekend. Look for photos on our web site soon. The Sound Footwork Hotline - (206) 938-3564The 14th Annual Emerald City Open Footbag Tournament, presented by Sound Footwork Footbag Club, will be held the weekend of June 7th and 8th at Lid Park on Mercer Island (East of Seattle). This event is one of the longest running Footbag events in the world, and is open to entrants from all around the world.
Footbag is a competitive sport, similar to a popular game played with the Hacky Sack. At this tournament, players will compete in one or more of the following popular Footbag games: Footbag Net, a singles or doubles court game, like tennis or volleyball, where players use only their feet to kick the Footbag over a 5 foot high net; Timed Footbag Consecutives, a singles competition, where players try to kick a Footbag with as many alternating kicks as they can within 5 minutes; and Footbag Golf, similar in concept to regular golf or disc golf, where the players complete a course by kicking the Footbag into "holes" which are cones placed around the course.
Spectators and competitors of all abilities are welcome. This event offers competition for novice, advanced/intermediate, and open players. There will also be free events for first time competitors with prizes donated by sponsors. Top players from around the world will be competing in the Footbag Net final rounds that begin at around 3:00 pm on Sunday, June 8. There is no admission charge for spectators.
