38. Andy Linder
-
- When did you see your first Footbag?
- Andy Linder received his first footbag in the fall of 1981 from his high school Biology teacher, Dale Oldis. Mr. Oldis, who introduced Andy to the sport, allowed students to kick in his classroom. Linder picked it up quickly as he had been a soccer player who spent much time juggling a soccer ball and doing tricks with it (some of these tricks were later converted in to some of Andy’s earliest footbag freestyle). Linder’s dreams of breaking the soccer ball juggling world record and playing college soccer ended in 1983 as a result of having chondromalacia, a weakening of the cartilage, in both knees. This medical condition would go on to affect, but not stop, Linder’s footbag career.

Linder and his partner Ted Martin held the doubles consecutive kicks world record of 100,001. The duo currently hold world records in one-pass and distance one-pass. Andy holds the current world record in 5-minute-timed consecutives with 1019 kicks. Linder retired from competition after the 1997 Worlds, where he took first place in both of the events he entered (5-minute-timed consecutives and doubles distance one-pass with Bruce Guettich). In 2001, Andy organized the world record for the largest footbag circle (946 players) at the Cornerstone Festival.

- When did you see your first Footbag?
- I began playing footbag in 1980. I was at home in Hayward, California. My cousin Jim “TOES” Fitzgerald inspired my by having a PR of 100 consecutive kicks. It was about 3 years later when I moved to Oregon. Eugene had a lot of great kickers to get involved with at that time. After attending my first tournament in Vancouver Washington, “The Pumice Open” I was hooked!
- Your own personal comments and notes?
- I started sewing footbags for Reed Gray and Jim Fitzgerald with a company called Perpetual Motion putting together Soc Sac footbags before I actually became addicted to playing the game. On the contrary I learned to play disc sports and to juggle as an offshoot of my interest in footbag.
