Footbag is Back -- and Growing

After a pretty wet and cold winter, footbag has come out of hibernation with more players and events than ever before. Just take a glance at the enclosed calendar of events to see what we mean.

In addition to weekly kicks all around the Bay Area, three large footbag events are coming together in the Bay Area over the next few months:

In addition, for the first time in years, there will be a footbag tournament in Southern California (Redondo Beach) on April 1-2 (look on the other side for more information).

Membership Blues

Few of you have sent in your yearly membership fee of $5.00 that we requested in the last newsletter. The Bay Area Footbag League currently has no funds to publish this newsletter or to send out calendars of local kicks. We honestly need your help so we can afford to continue to communicate with our ever-growing list of footbag fans and players. Only paid members will receive future newsletters.

Please help us out by sending a check for $5 to the address on the form to the right, and be sure to include your phone number if you would like to be on our phone tree. Remember, this nominal fee gives you the following:

$5 BAFL Member Benefits:

Western Regionals May 27-29!

For the third year in a row, the Western Regional Footbag Championships will be held on the beautiful Stanford Unversity Campus in Palo Alto on Memorial Day Weekend, May 27-29. DJ Randy Victory and his staff at Victory Sound will be back again for a third straight year of incredible non-stop tunes the whole three days at Wilbur Field on the Stanford Campus. Freestylers will love the freestyle surface with its own speakers and raging music, while the net players will have a great time with some of the best competition this year.

The Western Regionals will be a benefit for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and individuals who raise contributions will receive prizes donated by the event sponsors. Entry forms and Cystic Fibrosis sponsorship forms will be mailed out in April.

Television coverage is very likely, as this tournament attracts the best players on the west coast, from as far away as Canada. This event is a must see!

New Tourney in Southern Cal!

For the first time in recent memory, Southern California is back on the footbag map. Thanks to Scott Cleere and the Oops Footbag Club of Hermosa Beach, this April Fool's Day weekend promises some bona fide footbag fun at Veteran's Park in Redondo Beach.

The schedule isn't completely set, but plans are to have a two-day tournament on April 1st and 2nd, with freestyle competition on Saturday and doubles net competition on Sunday. There will also be pick-up singles net on Saturday.

Make your plans now -- the weather should be great, and Veteran's Park is a perfect spot with large crowds, a beautiful ocean view, and a wind-protected freestyle stage area!

The host hotel is the Vagabond Inn, 6226 Pacific Coast Highway, in Redondo Beach. The phone number is (310) 378-8555, or (800) 522-1555. Book now -- April Fools Day is just around the corner!

Member's Corner

Portland Rocked

by Dennis Jones (El Cerrito)
Portland was the site of the first annual freestyle-only footbag tournament, and Yours Truly was on hand to shred, laugh, learn, and basically everything else footbag tournaments are famous for. If you love the sport of footbag and have never been to a tournament, I have some simple advice: GO! Footbag tournaments are a great way to improve your game and meet other footbaggers from around the country. Onward about Portland...

I knew this tournament was going to be something special when I walked in Saturday morning and saw 15 new shredders, all skoolin' the same moves under the watchful eye of the great Kenny Shults. These kids were psyched, and I could see it in their eyes. This sport is really taking off and it's good to see. Speaking of taking off...

The first circle I found myself in was with one of the game's greats, Peter Irish, and the man had done his homework. He had Blurriest-to-Blizzard dialed. One of the smoothest kickers around, Pete will be staying in the Bay Area around April through August. Another great in attendance was the man, Rippin Rick Reese -- the game's greatest. During the judging seminar, Rippin' was asked to demonstrate all the moves on the cards; he did so flawlessly and on both sides... Awesome! That was worth the plane ticket alone.

BAFL's own Tim Kelly was there letting Portland know that the Bay Area is THE place to do one's homework. I'd say he got straight A's on all his assignments. All in all, this was by far the best freestyle tournament I've ever been to. Sign me up for next year. Special thanks go out to Kendall KIC and Kenny Shults; this was their tournament and it went over flawlessly. See you all in the Park!

More on BAFL

The Bay Area Footbag League is a community-based organization, formed to promote the sport of footbag as a healthy, alternative outdoor sport in the Bay Area by providing frequent opportunities for the public and our members to play and learn footbag. We play net and freestyle (circle-kicking) at least three times a week, year-round, and publish this newsletter and a calendar to help people interested in footbag keep in touch with our growing sport.

Our club is composed of world class athletes as well as new players. Anyone interested in footbag, as a player or spectator, can join BAFL to enjoy the friendship, good times, and unique athletic qualities of footbag. We have included a membership form on the front so you can become an official member right away. The affordable $5 dues help pay for the cost of mailing out the newsletters and calendars.

If you have access to e-mail, you can contact BAFL by sending a message to info@footbag.org, or you can join our electronic mailing list by sending e-mail to footbag-request@footbag.org.
